3WHY FX - A MUSIC MAKER LAB

As a music maker lab, 3Why FX pulls together musicians and makers to push the boundaries of musical instruments and effects. All of our products are the results of collaborations between makers and musicians. For example, the Crooked Polly was conceived after a challenge to take a safe-sounding chorus/vibrato effect to its extremities. The Spin Delay caters to musicians wanting to use infinite oscillations to layer textures without blowing out volumes with positive feedback.

The online store at www.3whyfx.com represents our desire to share what we have created with the rest of the world. For each effect, we explain our rationale behind the design and voicing. There are also audio and/or video demos of the pedals. We also share our learnings and insights on the use of effects in our blog.

FOUNDER - ALEX LEE

Stemming from the inability of rickety old fingers to handle guitar chord shapes, Alex started to learn how to make effects from the Internet. From this unassuming start, the craftsmanship and voicing of his pedals gained traction with local guitarists in the indie rock community. 3Why FX was hence founded.

Alex also uses the 3Why FX platform to preach openness and a DIY mentality. He continues to conduct pedalmaking classes to cultivate a newer generation of effects makers in his local community.

QUALITY HANDMADE EFFECTS FROM ASIA

Taiwan is not known as a place where one find quality handmade effects but 3Why FX strives to change that. There is a bludgeoning indie music scene in Taiwan which is growing despite societal roadblocks. The scene is DIY to the extreme and 3Why FX was born out of this environment in 2012.

All pedals are handmade in 3Why FX's workspace situated in an arts community - the 435 Art Studio. 3Why FX was fortunate to secure this space to use a hub for makers, musicians and aspiring makers to meet, learn and collaborate.
